What is a driver's license?
A driver's license is a valid document issued by a government organization that confirms the identity of the person who is issued it and gives legal authority to drive a motorized vehicle on public roads. It typically displays the driver's name, date and location of birth, a photograph, and address. A majority of states also require drivers to pass an exam in writing to prove their knowledge of the driving rules and regulations. The number on the back of the license can be used by banks and other authorities to identify you when you travel abroad.
In the United States driver's licences are usually issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state (DMV). They are valid for a number of years depending on the type of license and driver's age. Most driver's licenses include an alphanumeric number that is uniquely assigned to the bearer by the agency that issued the license, in addition to their photograph and other personal information. New York has a number of different license classes, tailored to suit driving needs and the type of vehicle. Young people starting out with the new license class must first apply for a permit to learner, that is valid for six months and legally certifies them as learners. During this period they must be with a licensed driver that can instruct them on the rules. After logging 50 practice hours including 10 hours at night, they can advance to a regular Class D license.
If you frequently travel to Canada or Mexico, an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) may be a viable alternative. It's an WHTI compliant ID that can be used to prove US citizenship at maritime and land ports of entry. EDLs are only offered to those who possess an active driver's license and a naturalization certificate or passport that confirms their US citizenship.
How do I get a driver's license?
A driver's license is a document that allows you to drive motor vehicles in New York State. This privilege comes with a variety of restrictions that drivers have to follow in order to remain safe while driving. Before you can get your license, you'll need to pass a test written that is based on the guidelines in the New York Driver's Manual. The DMV examiner will typically ask you questions regarding road safety and the rules of the road. You'll also need to pass the vision test. You may have passed this test in high school in which you sat with your eyes closed and read random letters for a couple of seconds. You must have a 20/40 or better vision, with or without spectacles.
You'll need to show proofs of your identity and residence. This can be done by bringing an acceptable document of identification, such as a passport, military ID or state ID card. You will also be required to bring documents that verify your current address. These include bank statements, pay stubs or lease agreements. The DMV provides an online tool that will assist you in determining what documents you need to bring.
If you're a New York resident, you can apply for a driver's license at any DMV office. It is recommended to make an appointment in advance of time, but it's not required. If you don't have an appointment, you could have to wait for a long time.
Before they can obtain their license, young people under 18 years old must complete the steps of the state's Graduated Driver Licensing Program. This lets young drivers gain experience and demonstrate their ability to drive safely before they are granted an official license.

What are the prerequisites to get a driver's license?
To obtain a driver's licence in New York involves meeting eligibility criteria, studying traffic laws, and practicing under supervision. The process also includes passing the written and road test. Depending on your age you may also need to take a drivers ed course. This is available at many high schools, colleges, and some pre-licensing courses offered by organizations like the American Automobile Association.
The first step in the licensing process is to apply for a learner's permit. This provisional license allows you to practice driving in New York state with a licensed driver who is 21 years old or older supervising you. You must pass an eye exam and answer 14 out of 20 questions on the test that you write correctly. You can prepare by studying the NYS Driver's Manual. You can also take a practice test available on the DMV website.
After you've received your license, you'll be required to drive for at least 50 hours, which includes 15 hours at night. Additionally your guardian or parent must sign a certification of Supervised Driving form (MV-262). Before you can get your full license, you must to pass a road test at the DMV in your area. How do I get an driver's license?

It is suggested that you read the manual as many times as possible in order to prepare for the test. If you don't, it could result in delay or even inability to obtain your driver's license.
Once you have passed the knowledge test, you will have to take a five-hour obligatory pre-licensing program to be able to take your road test. After passing the road test you will receive your driver's permit in the mail. Depending on the type driver's license that you're applying for, you may be required to pass a vision test or the driving test.
If you already have a valid driver's license from a different state or Canada you can exchange it for the New York Driver's License. To do this, your out-of-state license must have your photograph, be valid or have expired less than 24 months before the date you apply for the New York Driver's License.
